Competitors come from far and wide to be a part of the Australian Masters Games, but few have come further than archer Sylvana Plazanet.
Hailing from Kone in New Caledonia, Plazanet and her family have travelled nearly 3000 kilometres to be a part of the Masters Games. The Adelaide stop is a part of a long list of places where the archer has found success with the sport she loves.
Plazanet has won a variety of medals in her time, most notably taking out the gold medal at the World Masters Games in Turin, Italy in 2013 as well as winning silver in a national French competition.
With help from her English-speaking daughter, Wallis and husband/archery participant Guy, it’s clear that she comes into the 60-69+ Recurve event with a goal in mind: “To win”.
However, there’s more to the sport than the competition.
“She loves the sport because it’s really nice to meet new people,” Wallis said, translating for her mother. “Even though she can’t speak English, she’s always well-received and people try to help her all the time. It’s not the same mentality in our country so she loves to experience new things.”
After 30 years perfecting her craft in archery, the new places she gets to go, whilst having fun is a bonus for her, saying that Adelaide has been “superb and fantastic” so far.
