Men’s Racquetball Doubles playing for Gold

Shoes squeaking against the floor, ball hitting the wall, that’s the sound heard on court today when the Men’s Doubles Racquetball 50-59s category played for the gold.

Squash SA’s, Steve Broughton and Garry Thomas were up against stiff competition as they competed against John Souness and Geoff Birse, of Mountain District Squash Club, from Melbourne.

Though Squash SA just missed out on the win against their interstate competition, they still proved they could keep up with their opponents, as both teams were neck and neck the entire match.

The SA team were just points behind but it was the Victorians who won gold, “It was a good tough game… three good tough games. They’re a very strong team, and we just got the lucky breaks when we needed them,” said Souness.

The Games provide a platform through which adult Australians can compete, socialise and enjoy sport, and this was seen by both teams as they enjoyed friendly banter with one another throughout the competition.

“The second game… yes…the second game they were really pushing us… so we had to dig deep in the second game, but then we had a buffer going into the third which made it really hard on them,” Souness said. “We’ve been together maybe 20 years, this is the 5th Masters Games we’ve played in”.

Unlike other sports where it’s the best two out of three, racquetball requires the total points throughout all three games to win.

“It’s three games and the total aggregate score wins… so it was still alive in the third game. It’s the total points, once we got to eight points in that game, we won,” Souness said.

The 15th Australian Masters Games are being held in Adelaide, October 3-10, featuring more than 10,000 participants from across Australia and around the world.

The Australian Masters Games is proudly sponsored by the South Australian Tourism Commission through Events South Australia.
