A record row breaking Australian records

Clare Burrell is Australia’s newest indoor rowing record holder after breaking the current 500m lightweight time on Tuesday. After first competing in 1993 Australian Masters Games, 55-year-old Clare achieved the well-deserved title with a time of 1:55:4.

“It’s amazing, I didn’t expect to achieve this at all I’m thrilled. I am very proud but could not of achieved it without the support and this opportunity.”

Family involvement within rowing has kept Clare motivated to continue participating for over thirty years in the sport.

With her 83-year-old father as her trainer, and 81-year-old mother still rowing in the UK, strong family ties have encouraged Clare to continue completing and pushed her to achieve her best.

However, not only a rowing champion, Clare is a woman of many sports with records competing in rowing, cycling and swimming to date. As a passionate sports-woman she exercises three or four times a week.

"I've competed a lot, I've done other masters games and concept 2 challenges… I do lots of other training, I run and I cycle; I walk my dogs; and I do triathlons. I do a lot of fitness"

The Australian Masters Games aims to promote the benefits of long-term health and wellbeing. The Games provide a platform through which adult Australians can compete socialise and enjoy sport.

"It's great fun. You see all age groups, all abilities and so much encouragement, people just help each other and it's a great environment”, Clare said.

“It's fantastic, it's about having a go. It's all about having a go! You only have to have some determination because anyone can do anything. You're only limited by your imagination.”

The 15th Australian Masters Games are being held in Adelaide, October 3-10, featuring more than 10,000 participants from across Australia and around the world.
